It looked like the Three Lions had contracted the same disease of complacency that plagued the elders as they put on a show of lifeless, garden-variety football against the Swiss in the first half.
It now looks like it wasn’t just us spectators that were disgruntled after that dire first-half performance.
After the match, left-back Danny Rose said,
“The second half wasn’t amazing but it was better than the first and we’re over the moon we got the win.”
Centre-back Harry Maguire had similar things to say,
“We struggled early on in the game but we want to be confident in playing from the back and we did it better in the second half. We do not want to give chances and goals away.”
Gareth Southgate also weighed in on the issue,
“We always encourage them to have a voice. It’s important they feel close enough that they can get on to each other. Then we have to make sure that doesn’t boil over. But it was quite calm by the time we got in there.”
