Gerard Deulofeu admits he has probably played his last game for Barcelona

Gerard Deulofeu says that his poor form at Barcelona was his own fault and he now doubts he will make it at the club.

The Catalan giants re-signed the Spaniard from Everton in the summer, but he was loaned to Watford in the January transfer window after failing to impress Barca boss Ernesto Valverde.

Deulofeu has not had many opportunities to get back into Valverde’s good books, as he has only appeared four times since arriving at Vicarage Road, scoring once and making one assist, due to a stress fracture sustained to his foot.

The winger has spoken about his performances in an interview with Esports Cope and has admitted that his exclusion at Barcelona is his fault.

“At the end of the day, it’s me who has to earn the right to play more. I think I was better off the bench than when I had the chance to start games,” Deulofeu said. NaijaBet.com

“I know I didn’t prove myself. I believe in myself more than anyone, but I recognise I was not consistent enough.

“I told [Ernesto Valverde] when I left [for Watford] that a lot of it was my fault because he’d given me the opportunities I wanted.”

Competition for places in Barcelona’s starting XI is fierce and, were he to return, Deulofeu would find himself in direct competition with recent signings Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool and Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund. Indeed, the young Spaniard seems to have accepted that he is unlikely to ever play for Barcelona again. NaijaBet.com

“I think it will be very difficult to go back,” he added.

“You don’t have to be too clever to know that if Barcelona loaned me to another team, it’s because they have little interest in me.

“I was also in agreement that I had to leave because I hadn’t played for a month-and-a-half and things weren’t working out.

“I want to play and be happy. I am not happy being on the bench.

“At the end of the season, we will have to talk to Barca and my agent, but I can’t say what will happen because I don’t know myself.”

Deulofeu showed promise during his spells at Everton, especially during his first run under Roberto Martinez in 2013. However, the 24-year-old has made little progression from those early days and has only managed to score fifteen times in all competitions since that first season at Goodison Park. NaijaBet.com

Watford next take on Bournemouth at Vicarage Road on 31 March, and though that might come too soon for Deulofeu he is at least expected to return before the end of the current campaign.
