Manchester City reached the quarter-finals ,Kompany ruled out “for at least a month”

Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time despite a lethargic second leg goalless draw against Dynamo Kiev.

City, 3-1 up from the first leg, were in control of the tie but lost both centre-backs Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi to injury early on.

Jesus Navas hit the post with a low drive in the second half and Yaya Toure struck straight at the goalkeeper.

“Vincent has again a muscle injury in his calf, the same problem he has had before,” said Pellegrini.

“He will miss at least three quarters of the rest of the season.”

The Belgium international, 29, has started just 13 games in the Premier League all season and has had 14 calf injuries since signing in 2008.

Kompany is set for scan on either Wednesday or Thursday, with Pellegrini stating that “always with muscle injuries it is a minimum of one month”. Naija and Bet

Leicester boss : Premier League title race still open

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri  still insisting that Premier League title race is not a straight fight between his side and Tottenham.

The Foxes are five points clear at the top with eight games left after beating Newcastle 1-0 on Monday.

Tottenham lie second, with Arsenal 11 points behind the leaders and fourth-placed Manchester City 12 off the pace.

Asked if only Leicester or Spurs could be champions, Ranieri, responded: “No, the race is open.” There are so many people who are dreaming, but we have to continue to work hard.

“I want to fight every match. Now our concentration is about Crystal Palace, another difficult match. We will go to battle there.”

Former Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage thinks his old club will come out on top and has written off the chances of Arsenal and Manchester City.

“It’s ridiculous to think of Leicester being so far ahead,”It’s a two-horse race, no doubt about it.

“You can’t rule out Spurs, but City and Arsenal have no chance of winning it now. You can’t see them winning four or five in a row.” Naijabet.com

Rafael Benitez says Newcastle will survive despite defeat at Leicester

Rafael Benitez says there were enough positives during Monday’s 1-0 defeat by Leicester to suggest his Newcastle team can avoid relegation.

The Magpies are next to bottom of the Premier League after losing their  first game under new manager.

It leaves Benitez with nine matches to steer the team away from the drop zone.

Benitez,   said: “It will be difficult but with this commitment on the pitch I think that we can do it.”

Newcastle began brightly against the league leaders, but fell behind to a spectacular Shinji Okazaki overhead kick and were unable to equalise despite both Ayoze Perez and Moussa Sissoko going close.

Benitez  added: “We started really well, but the reaction of the team in the second half was pleasing because you could see the commitment of the players and we were trying to win.

“When you are in this position, it’s important to create and I think we’ll take our chances next time.” Naija and bet

Man Utd avoid Uefa action over Hillsborough chants at Liverpool

Manchester United will not be punished by Uefa after some of their fans sang about the Hillsborough disaster during a Europa League defeat at Liverpool.

Offensive chants were heard during Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Anfield in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Ninety-six Liverpool fans died in an FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough between the Reds and Nottingham Forest in 1989.

Uefa decided to take no action as the chanting was not mentioned in the match officials’ reports.

However, officials are set to pay closer attention to chants when the teams meet for the return leg at Old Trafford on Thursday.

United have said such incidents “have no place in the game”. Naijabet

West Ham boss confident of Team to beat Man Utd in replay

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic “fancies” his side to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-final replay at Upton Park – the last cup tie there.

The teams drew 1-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday with the winners of the replay moving into the semi-finals at Wembley.

“It’s going to be a tough game, but I fancy us because we’re going to be even more confident,” Bilic told BBC Sport.

“Manchester United are a different team when they play away from home and don’t have that same confidence.”

West Ham are moving to the Olympic Stadium next season so the game against Manchester United will be the last at the Hammers’ current Upton Park home.

“With the history of our stadium it’s going to a be another historic game and you can’t ask for more,” added Bilic.

“But to make history we have to beat them – we won’t put it in the books if we lose the last game.

“It’s going to be another epic home FA Cup match and we couldn’t ask for more – it’s like Spielberg.” Naijabet

Tottenham sink Aston Villa, closed gap on leaders Leicester

Tottenham closed the gap on leaders Leicester to two points after Harry Kane scored two goals in three minutes to sink Aston Villa.

The striker raced onto Dele Alli’s quickly taken free-kick and fired past Brad Guzan just before the break.

The combination worked again moments after the interval as Kane poked in Alli’s low cross.

Villa mustered just two shots on target as they slipped to a fifth-straight league defeat.

Spurs’ title bid appears firmly back on track after two games without a win, while Remi Garde’s side remain nine points from safety and look increasingly destined for life in the Championship next season.

Tottenham manager : “It was a good victory and three important points after a few games that have not been so good. We created more chances and played well. It is difficult to play against teams playing for survival but we had the right mentality and I am pleased.

On the title race: “We need to keep the pressure on and win games. You cannot stop the dream of the supporters and they are right to dream. But we need to work hard.” Naija and bet

The Journey of Riyad Mahrez Leicester forward to the Top

Riyad Mahrez has been one of the inspirations behind Leicester’s unexpected but widely welcomed Premier League title challenge.

The 25-year-old Algeria international, signed from French side Le Havre for just £400,000 in January 2014, has been a sensation this season, scoring 15 league goals, including the winner against Watford on Saturday.

Mahrez’s journey to this point has been far from straightforward.

The slight but talented forward was born in the tough Parisian suburb of Sarcelles and lost his father, Ahmed, to a heart attack at the age of 15.

But his determination and skill took him across France and to the top of the Premier League. Listen to Mahrez discuss the influence of his father

‘Sport is the way to get out from the street’

Mahrez’s first club was AAS Sarcelles, based in a poor suburb in the north of Paris that has a large number of African immigrants. He joined the club – who play in the local Ligue de Paris – in 2004.

Hayel Mbemba, a former team-mate at AAS Sarcelles: “Riyad was a man who played on Monday, Tuesday… all the day, every day he played football.

“When he finished playing with the team he would go around the gymnasiums of Sarcelles looking for somewhere to play and train. That was the mentality of Riyad. Naijabet.com Continue reading The Journey of Riyad Mahrez Leicester forward to the Top
