Real Betis midfielder Fabian Ruiz has hailed manager Quique Setien for giving him “confidence” this season, insisting he stayed with the club because of the Spaniard.

The 21-year-old’s fine form this season has seen him being heavily linked with a move away from the Estadio Benito Villamarín, but Ruiz has since insisted he is staying put because of the influence of manager Quique Setien.

Setien was announced as the manager of Betis at the start of the campaign after the dismissal of Victor Sanchez, who oversaw the Seville club’s dismal 2016/17 La Liga season – with the club finishing in 15th. NaijaBet.com

Ruiz has now heaped praise on Setien for changing the fortunes of the club around, as well as giving him the “confidence” to dominate the midfield.

“Thanks to Setien I am enjoying a high level of performance this year,” Fabian told ABC de Sevilla (via Football Espana).

“I decided to stay at Betis because I think it has a really strong project this season and moving forward, hopefully we will be fighting for Europe at the end of the campaign.

“In Sevilla you experience a lot of football, it has the biggest and best derby in football and the feeling of passion is very strong.

“Setien has given me a lot of confidence since pre-season and thanks to him I am playing very well this year.”

Ruiz has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season for Betis, scoring two goals, while also registering six assists, as his exploits for the club have recently seen the midfielder rewarded with a new long-term contract. NaijaBet.com

Betis travel to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on 2 April to take on Getafe CF, with just four points separating the sides, who sit in eighth and ninth respectively.
