Antonio Conte takes fresh dig at Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea record

Antonio Conte has made the bold claim that his Chelsea record outshines Jose Mourinho‘s because of the more difficult circumstances he has faced at Stamford Bridge.

Conte, 48, managed his 100th game in charge of Chelsea on Thursday night, as his side picked up three points against Burnley, making it now 65 wins for the Italian.

Mourinho on the other hand claimed his 72nd victory when he marked his century match for the Blues. But Conte believes his predecessor had an easier job when he reigned at Stamford Bridge.

In their debut seasons, both managers clinched the Premier League trophy, though Conte inherited a team who finished 10th the season before, while the Portuguese tactician took over from a team who finished second in the league.

Conte therefore believes his achievements eclipsed those of his managerial counterpart, as he also points to winning the Serie A title with a struggling Juventus – at the time – as a point of reference.

Asked about him own record, Conte said (according to the Daily Mail): “I could do better. This is my mentality. We could have done better. Mourinho won 72 in the first 100 games?

“We are talking about a great manager. Don’t forget the first 100 games with Mourinho were many years ago.

“Now, it is not simple to have this run of results, in this present Chelsea. I’m pleased for the players, for the club, but we could do better.

“For Mourinho, it was a different era in the club’s history. I won a title with Juventus after they finished seventh twice before I arrived. It is a great, great achievement. Not a simple achievement.

“Last season we won a title after a 10th place. It’s a great, great achievement. Not a simple achievement. I don’t like the stats. I only found out after the game that it was my 100th game with Chelsea.”

Conte and his side face the short journey to Wembley on Sunday as his side take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-final, with victory taking them to next month’s final against Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.

The Italian will be looking to rectify last season’s FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal by clinching his first piece of silverware this season, though Mark Hughes’ Southampton stand in their way first.
