Santi Cazorla hopes to rejoin Arsenal teammates before end of season

Santi Cazorla hopes to play “some part” with Arsenal before their 2017/18 campaign ends.

The midfielder is presently recovering from a serious ankle injury and has not played a single game this season.

Nevertheless, he feels a comeback is drawing near, thus penciling a return ahead of the summer break.

“I’ve still got some way to go, because after being sidelined for 18 months, everything has to be done in its own time,” Cazorla told AS.

“But the sensations I have keep getting better and I’m feeling optimistic about the future.

“The objective is to play some part with the team before the season ends, but we have to take things carefully.

“After being out for so long it will take a while to get back into form, it’s a real struggle, but when you have been out like I have, you also notice pains elsewhere – apart from what I’ve had with my tendon.

“But all of that must mean that I am doing things right, and I hope to be back as soon as possible.”

Cazorla’s injury woes explained

Cazorla joined the Gunners from Malaga in 2012 and has to date made 241 appearances for the club in all competitions.

He current injury, which has seen him undergo eight rounds of surgery on his Achilles, has meant he has missed 99 consecutive matches for Arsenal.

His last game was a Champions League tie against Ludogorets on 19 October 2016, when he sustained the injury.

Cazorla, who turned 33 last December, will see his present deal expire in June.

Arsenal’s remaining games of the season include the second leg of their semi-final against Atletico Madrid, the scoreline currently 1-1, and Premier League matches against Burnley, Leicester City and Huddersfield.
