Marcelo admits he should have conceded a penalty v Bayern

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has confessed that Bayern Munich should have been awarded a penalty in their Champions League semi-final return leg.

Los Blancos and Bayern played out a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu last night, but with the match finishing 4-3 on aggregate, Zinedine Zidane’s men progressed through to another European Cup final, though the result could have been different.

Late in the first half Bayern midfielder-cum-defender Joshua Kimmich saw his cross into Real’s penalty area blocked by Marcelo, and despite the Bavarian’s protests, a spot kick was not awarded, but according to Real’s left-back it was the incorrect call.

“Yes it hits me in the hand” he told a reporter post-match.

“Is it a penalty then?” came the reply, before Marcelo answered: “If it hit my hand, then I think so, yes.”

Vidal not impressed

Jupp Heynckes’ side can count themselves very unlucky, as the veteran coach was missing a number of first-team regulars through injury, including Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal.

And the 95-time capped Chilean international was not impressed with Marcelo’s actions, as well as the referee’s decision to not award his team a penalty, making his feelings known on social media.

Known for being forthright, Vidal on Instagram, labelled referee Cuneyt Cakır’s decision not to award Bayern a penalty as “criminal sh*t.” Elimination undoubtedly hurt the German champions as they have now suffered four semi-final defeats in five seasons.

Bayern can now turn their attention to achieving a domestic double having already secured the Bundesliga title this season, while a meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal final awaits them later this month.
