Arsenal urged to hire Sean Dyche as Arsene Wenger’s replacement

Former England striker Chris Sutton believes Arsenal should take a punt on hiring Burnley boss Sean Dyche for the vacant managerial position in north London.

Sutton, 45, has praised the work Sean Dyche has done at Turf Moor since taking over in 2012, leading the club to seventh in the Premier League, while also building a disciplined and organised squad on a shoestring budget.

The 46-year-old will lead the Clarets out to European football next season, but despite this, the Englishman has not been rumoured to be in the running for the vacant job at the Emirates, much to Sutton’s despair.

Such is the managerial ability of Dyche that Burnley only conceded 39 goals this season, just one more than Liverpool and Chelsea, but incredibly 12 less than Arsenal, who finished just a place above them.

Sutton believes the perception of Dyche is that he is “unfashionable,” but he dismissed this claim, believing he could possibly transform Arsenal should he be given the opportunity.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live Sport, Sutton said: “Why not Sean Dyche? Why have we not heard Sean Dyche?

“What are the issues at Arsenal? Do we really see issues with Arsenal going forward as an attacking outfit? I don’t think so.

“Where are the issues? Defensively. What has Sean Dyche done at Burnley since he’s gone in there? He has made them watertight and organised.

“He’s done his apprenticeship, he’s taken Burnley up, credit to the board at the particular time because they stuck with him when they went down, he brought them back.

“He’s had five years at Burnley and he has turned them into a brilliantly organised outfit,” added the former Norwich City striker.

“That is what I think Arsenal need in this moment in time. But he is unfashionable – that is everybody’s perception.

“But that is an unfair perception I think of Sean Dyche because he’s had to work, with respect, with a group of Burnley players with limited resources.

“So how do we know that Sean Dyche couldn’t go into Arsenal and turn them into a strong, all-round, outfit and compete for titles?”

Arsene Wenger ended his 22-year association with Arsenal after stepping down on the final day of the season, and while there has been much speculation surrounding his successor, the position remains vacant.

Former Arsenal midfielder and current Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta is the frontrunner for the position, while another former player in Patrick Vieira is also on the shortlist.

Elsewhere, more reputable managerial names have been mooted to take over in north London with the like of Joachim Low, Massimiliano Allegri and Carlo Ancelotti all rumoured to be interested in the job.
