Gary Neville questions whether Mohamed Salah is having a “freak” season

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville is confused by Mohamed Salah’s excellent form this season.

Salah, 25, has had an incredible season with Liverpool, scoring 43 goals in 49 games in all competitions.

However before arriving at Anfield, the Egyptian had never scored more than 20 goals in a single campaign, and Neville has admitted he is interested to see if Salah can maintain this level of form next season.

“I want to understand whether this is an absolute freak,” Neville told Sky Sports, via Goal.

“I watched him back at Basel and at Chelsea and his stats were getting better, but this season has been a jump from nowhere. Where has it come from?

“You normally see them growing and to me it’s the most intriguing thing about next season.”

Neville added: “Is he a 20-goal a season man, which is still a really good player, or is he going to be mentioned in the same light as [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo?

“If he goes on to score 43 next season and 40 the year after then he gets into those Messi and Ronaldo numbers.”

Salah’s performance this season has been anomalous, in that it took the Egyptian three seasons and 83 appearances in Serie A to match the number of goals he’s bagged this term.

The last time the forward played in the Premier League was with Chelsea, where he netted twice in 19 games.

Salah’s own explanation for his drastically improved form is that he wasn’t give enough opportunities at Stamford Bridge. He certainly won’t have that problem next season.
