Premier League introduce new individual player award

The Premier League have introduced a new award to honour the player who has contributed the most assists throughout the season.

The ‘Premier League Playmaker award’ will sit alongside both the ‘Golden Boot award’ and the ‘Golden Glove award’, awarded for most goals scored and most clean sheets respectively.

There are roughly four Premier League rounds of football remaining before the season is over, with a host of players in contention to win the new prestigious award.

Richard Masters, who is the Managing Director of the Premier League spoke of his pride over the new award which will be handed out at the end of the season in May.

He said: “The Premier League Playmaker award allows fans to celebrate their footballing heroes who work hard for their team by providing goalscoring opportunities.

“Giving supporters the opportunity to present this new accolade, as well as the Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards, is a great way in which Cadbury are working with us to celebrate key achievements in the competition.”

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne currently leads the way on assists for this season, conjuring up 15 so far this campaign.

City teammates Leroy Sane and David Silva occupy the remaining podium places, with 12 and 11 assists respectively. Tottenham Hotspurs Dele Alli completes the top four with 10.

However, perhaps the biggest surprise is that Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil is so far down the assist list for this season. NaijaBet.com

The German playmaker is often celebrated for his ability to aid his teammates in scoring goals. In fact, the skilful midfielder has provided 50 league assists in 142 league games, averaging an assist every 2.84 games.

The Arsenal man has only provided eight times for his Gunners teammates this season, with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, Mo Salah (all on nine assists) all ahead of Ozil this season for their contributions.
