Premiership Preview: Newcastle United vs Tottenham

Newcastle may have left it late, but are beginning to strengthen in key areas of the squad. The Magpies ended the 2017/18 campaign on a high with a 3-0 win over Chelsea, but will be keen to avoid a similar start to last season where they lost 2-0 to Tottenham.

Spurs are paying the price for their players going so far in the World Cup as they boast a lengthy absentee list coming into their opening game of the season and are, at the time of writing, yet to do any business in the transfer market.

They won both league games against Newcastle last season, however, and have won three of their last four visits to St. James’ Park.

However, any hopes of a repeat of their 2-0 win over Newcastle last term will depend on what Magpies side turns up. The fans will be desperate for a positive result, with a draw on the cards. Bet Now NaijaBet

Team News

Newcastle United – Martin Dubravka is a doubt with a knock, but should be fit to start for Newcastle here, while Mohamed Diame’s possible absence could pave the way for Ki Sung-yueng to make his debut.Florian Lejeune, however, is ruled out with a knee injury and will be sidelined for some time.

Summer arrival Fabian Schar may deputise for Lejeune alongside Jamaal Lascelles at the heart of the defence, though Rafa Benitez is set to stick with the tried and tested Ciaran Clark, while Salomon Rondon could lead the attack.

Newcastle bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Federico Fernandez from Swansea on deadline day.

Tottenham– Mauricio Pochettino’s starting options are thin on the ground with the Tottenham boss potentially without no fewer than 16 players here.

Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko are ruled out and with Harry Winks set to miss out, Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele, who both rarely featured at the World Cup for England and Belgium, respectively, may start.

However, the likes of Hugo Lloris, Kieran Trippier, Harry Kane and Jan Vertongen are not expected to feature from the off.

Son Heung-Min will likely start here before he jets off for the Asian Games with South Korea.
