RB Leipzig put ball in Everton’s court over Ademola Lookman deal

RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick has revealed Everton loanee Ademola Lookman’s transfer situation depends on his parent club.

The forward joined Leipzig from the Toffees on a six-month loan contract in January, without an option to make the deal permanent.

Lookman became the first Englishman to score in Germany since 2005 when he netted on debut back in February against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Since then, the 20-year-old England under-21 international has featured in eight of Leipzig’s 11 games, scoring two goals in the process.

And Rangnick has stated that a decision on the winger’s future will be made at the end of the season.

“If it were down to us, I’d already know the answer,” Rangnick was quoted as saying by ESPN (via Goal).

“But it’s not only down to us. We have no clause in the contract.

“I think that we can only answer the question once the season’s finished. It also depends on what happens at Everton.”

Lookman scored the equalizer in Leipzig’s 1-1 stalemate with Werder Bremen last Sunday and Rangnick lauded his display.

“‘Mola has shown that he is more than just a desperate last-minute signing,” he continued.

“How he played during the second half at Bremen, I really liked that. And not only because he scored that goal.”

If Lookman does decide to stay with the Bundesliga outfit, he will be the latest in a long line of young talent that Everton have let go over the years; the latest being Ross Barkley to Chelsea and John Stones to Manchester City.

Sixth-place Leipzig were beaten 5-2 by Hoffenheim on Saturday placing a greater unlikelihood of a top-four finish at the end of the campaign. And even a place in the Europa League is now in jeopardy as Eintracht are snapping at their heels in seventh place.

Die Roten Bullen’s next game is against Mainz on Sunday 29 April.
