Thibaut Courtois plans to sue former Belgium boss

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is planning to launch legal action against former Belgium coach Marc Wilmots after he accused the goalkeeper and his father of leaking team news.

Wilmots’ comments were initially made during an interview with BeIN SPORTS, where he told reporters that Courtois and his father Thierry had leaked team selection news during the 2016 European Championship in France.

Courtois has since hit back, taking to his Instagram account to declare that he has begun legal proceedings to sue Wilmots for libel and defamation.

The 25-year-old posted: “Mr Wilmots – not for the first time – reiterates publicly and intentionally (makes) accusations against my honour and my reputation.

“As well as my father, we decided together to file a complaint accompanied by criminal indemnification proceedings for libel and defamation.”

Thierry Courtois also gave his opinion on Wilmots comments, telling Belgian publication DH:  “I never in my life communicated a team composition to any journalist.

“Being a top player and also in a technical staff of a European level club, I know how delicate it is.

“My teammates and players also knew it. We work together for a long time to get results, I hate leaks.

Wilmots was sacked by the Belgium national team after their defeat to Wales in the quarter-final of the 2016 European Championship, where Courtois hinted in 2016 that he told the then head coach to resign from his position after the defeat.

The former Schalke 04 midfielder’s latest managerial stint was with the Ivory Coast national side, though he left his position last year after just six months in charge due to the nation’s failure to qualify for the World Cup this summer.

Under the auspices of new manager Roberto Martinez, Belgium will enter the World Cup this summer in Group G, alongside England, Panama and Tunisia.
