Togo coach Claude Le Roy said he was content with his side’s goalless draw with the reigning African champions Ivory Coast on Monday at Stade d’Oyem.
The 68-year old, who is coaching at his record ninth Afcon, spearheaded the Hawks to a stellar performance against the tournament favourites who boast a star-studded side.
Le Roy said, “I was satisfied with this result because we followed our plan. We worked a lot before the match. Sometimes in the game we were confident and just about to score but other times we were shivering from Ivory Coast’s attack.” Naija and Bet
Le Roy lamented the heat and humidity in Oyem that, according to him, affected the players’ energy as well as the coaches on the touchline.
“It was very hot this evening. Even on our side. The players needed the energy however, the match was very exciting,” he added.Le Roy admitted that as underdogs this was an impressive result, especially against a top quality side like Ivory Coast.
“We qualified for Afcon as the 16th team so we did what it takes to win the match but we are satisfied it was a draw. The Ivory Coast coach chose some experienced players like Serge Aurier so there was potential on their side. For me I am very satisfied.”
“The referee was excellent. He did not show any card this afternoon. The behavior of everybody in the match was good.”
Togo face Morocco in their next Group C tie on January 20 at the same stadium before taking on DR Congo on January 24 at Stade de Port Gentil.
