Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their new manager on a three-year contract with an option for a further year.
Mourinho said: “To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.
“He has won trophies and inspired players in countries across Europe and, of course, he knows the Premier League very well, having won three titles here.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to Manchester United. His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward.”
United will not be holding a news conference to officially introduce their new manager, Mourinho has no plans to talk to the media until July.
Mourinho is now expected to travel to Portugal where he is due to speak at a university on Monday and Tuesday but United fans will be able to see him at Old Trafford a week on Sunday – the United manager is due to take charge of the England team in the Socceraid charity match.
