Ajax players all responsible for “playing sh*t” this season, says Andre Onana

Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has hit out at club CEO Edwin van der Sar and director of football Marc Overmars for their poor performances this season.

The most decorated side in Eredivisie history (33 titles), Ajax have now gone four years without a league title, having lost out this season to PSV Eindhoven.

The title was sealed at the weekend as PSV beat Ajax 3-0 at the Philips Stadion, taking them 10 points clear with an unassailable lead at the top. NaijaBet.com

And 22-year-old Onana, who has been ever-present in the league this season, blames van der Sar and Overmars for the Amsterdam side’s failures.

“That this happens is not only the fault of the manager [Erik ten Hag], because I know that the media will spread negativity about him,” Onana said, as reported by Goal.

“Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar, they are all equally responsible for making us play sh*t. It is the fault of everyone at Ajax, not just that of Ten Hag.” NaijaBet.com

Ajax’s defeat to PSV on Sunday was their fifth of the season in the league, but this year has also seen them fail to qualify for both the Champions League and Europa League – being knocked out of both in the qualifying campaigns.

Onana at the heart of Ajax’s stern defence

Despite their failures this season, Ajax have been impressive at the back, conceding fewer goals than any other team in the Eredivisie (31). NaijaBet.com

That is thanks, in part, to the form of Onana, who has 11 clean sheets in the league so far this season – the third highest tally in the league.

The 22-year-old has averaged 2.61 saves per game this season and 2.61 saves per goal conceded, averaging one goal conceded per game.

His form has seen him recently linked with a move away from Ajax, with Tottenham Hotspur the name most frequently mentioned.
