Confirmed: Bayern tried two other coaches before Kovac appointment

Uli Hoeness has confirmed Bayern Munich hired Niko Kovac after Thomas Tuchel and Jupp Heynckes turned down the opportunity to manage the Bundesliga champions next season.

Kovac, 46, currently coaches Eintracht Frankfurt and will take over from Heynckes at the end of the season on a three-year deal.

Tuchel was rumoured to be one of the favourites to take the reins in 2018-19, but the former Dortmund boss has – according to Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge – already signed an agreement with an unnamed club, rumoured to be Paris Saint-Germain. NaijaBet

Speaking about Bayern’s search for a coach Hoeness told reporters: “It was portrayed as having been a desperate search. Both of us and Hasan [Salihamidzic] have tried for a very, very long time to persuade Jupp.

“When we realised in a final, final conversation that he was not doing it, we were talking to the coach, who was free, Thomas Tuchel.

“He told us that he had already decided. That was a shame, but not a shock for us. He also had no contract offer, but it was the offer of a mutual conversation with us both, with Hasan he had met before.

“Then a few days later we met again internally and decided that our preferred candidate is now Niko Kovac. And that’s how it happened.”

What’s next for Heynckes post-football life in Bavaria is unclear, but the German came out of retirement to manage the Bundesliga outfit, and that is likely where he will return at the end of this campaign. NaijaBet.com

For now, however, Heynckes still has unfinished business to take care of before he vacates his office to the incoming Croatian in the summer.

Bayern are still on course to secure the treble this season. They have already clinched the Bundesliga title and are currently in the semi-finals of the German Cup and the Champions League.

The Bundesliga giants will take on Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Cup semi-final on April 17, and will face Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final on 25 April.
