Only three Liverpool players would get into Man City’s XI – Stan Collymore

Former footballer Stan Collymore believes only three of the current Liverpool squad would get into Manchester City‘s starting eleven.

Liverpool have excelled in attack this season with their front trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane stealing the limelight and scoring 82 goals combined.

The Merseyside club currently sit third in the Premier League, just a point behind second-placed United who take on Bournemouth on Wednesday evening, while also still competing in the Champions League. The Reds’ semi-final first leg against AS Roma takes place next week at Anfield.

Collymore, who made 64 league appearances for the Reds, scoring 28 goals, believes that just three Liverpool stars would make the starting eleven for Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, only one of the three forward trio named above would be considered according to Collymore.

Writing in the Mirror, Collymore said: “They might have beaten them three times this term and that Champions League quarter-final might still be fresh in the memory but, by my reckoning, only three Liverpool players get into City’s starting line-up: Van Dijk, Mo Salah and Andy Robertson.

“And I include Robertson only because City’s Benjamin Mendy has been out injured.

“That shows how far they still have to go.

“So the big step now is for Klopp to put some silverware on the table and, if it’s Old Big Ears, then no-one will be happier than me.”

Since Benjamin Mendy’s serious knee injury, no City left-back has particularly stood out. The likes of Fabian Delph and Oleksandr Zinchenko have vied for the role.

Meanwhile, Andrew Robertson, of Liverpool, excelled in the recent quarter-final games against the Sky Blues in the Champions League while in the Premier League, the Scotland international has been their most creative defender in 2018 (10 chances).

The other Liverpool player Collymore mentions, Virgil van Dijk, arrived on a £75m transfer deal in January and the Reds have kept seven clean sheets over his last 11 appearances.

City won the league title at the weekend with five games to spare. It is Guardiola’s first league title in England and his second competition win this season having beaten Arsenal 3-0 at Wembley Stadium back in February to win the Carabao Cup. He joins Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti in a select group of three managers to have won first division titles in three of Europe’s top five leagues.

Liverpool, meanwhile, next play West Brom at the Hawthorns on Saturday’s early kick-off.
