Explained: Why movie stars Al Pacino and De Niro have become Trabzonspor fans

But in recent days, there has been a surprise addition to the celebrity football fandom as Al Pacino and Robert De Niro have been shown to be Trabzonspor fans.

That’s right. Two of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars support Turkish Superlig side Trabzonspor – who are currently fifth in the league.

But why? How? It is all down to the Turkish club’s former board member Nevzat Aydin, who met the duo in New York before presenting them with personalised shirts. NaijaBet.com

Tweeting a picture of him with Pacino and De Niro, Aydin wrote: “Two men I’d most like to meet in life.

“Modest, charismatic, fatherly and intimate both. It was a delicious meal that lasted longer than 2.5 hours.

“’Now you have a friend in Turkey’, I said when I left.”

And Aydin later admitted he discussed more than just football with the movie legends over his two-and-a-half-hour meal.

“We talked about their upcoming movie The Irishman, not about football,” he told Goal.

“And we also talked about De Niro’s parody on Saturday Night Live with Ben Stiller.

“Robert De Niro is funny and paternal. While he was leaving, embraced me incredibly, and he is also very impressive when he talks.”

Other well-known celebrity fans

Pacino and De Niro’s support of Trabzonspor may be a bit left-field but they are joined by the likes of Will Ferrell and Sylvester Stallone in supporting European football teams. NaijaBet.com

Ferrell is a Chelsea fan while Stallone has been known to turn up at Goodison Park in support of his beloved Everton.

Slightly more obscure, Prince William is joined by Tom Hanks as an Aston Villa fan while West Ham boasts the former leader of the free world, Barack Obama among their admirers.
