Marco Verratti is backing former Paris Saint-Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti to become the next permanent Italy manager.

The four-time world champions are without a full-time coach following the dismissal of Gian Piero Ventura after he failed to secure participation at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Italy U21 coach Luigi Di Biagio has been placed in temporary charge with the Italian FA seeking a sixth manager since 2006, and if Azzurri playmaker Verratti had his say, Ancelotti would be approached for the gig.

“I made my Champions League debut thanks to Ancelotti and he helped so much with my mentality,” he told Canal+, via Football Italia.

“He also helped me off the field and remains a very important figure for me.

“We’ll see if he comes to the Nazionale. I’d certainly like him to.”

Ancelotti’s managerial record

A well-travelled coach, the former Italian midfielder is one of six managers – along with Jose Mourinho, Ernst Happel, Giovanni Trapattoni, Tomislav Ivic and Eric Gerets – to have won domestic league championships in at least four different countries.

Ancelotti’s league titles have come in his native Italy, England, France and Germany with AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern respectively. NaijaBet.com

He’s also one of two managers, with Bob Paisley being the other, to have won the European Cup on three occasions, albeit the Englishman achieved all of his triumphs at one club (Liverpool) whereas Ancelotti has shared those moments with AC Milan (2003 and 2007) and Real Madrid (2014).

Currently a free agent following his sacking by Bayern last autumn, Ancelotti is among the favourites to guide Italy into a new era.
