Arsene Wenger rules Mohamed Elneny out of Europa League semi-final

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has been ruled out of the Gunners’ Europa League semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid.

Elneny, 25, has enjoyed his best season yet in an Arsenal shirt, making 29 appearances in all competitions and proving a reliable performer when fit, as Wenger has rotated his central midfield options due to injuries and loss of form of other players.

However the Egypt international was stretchered off in the second half of Arsenal’s 4-1 win over West Ham United, with Arsene Wenger saying, via Arsenal’s official website: “the early signs are not good.

“It’s an ankle problem that is very painful.

“Overall I believe that we have to wait until the X-ray to know a little more about it. But Thursday will be too soon for him.”

The Egyptian international has been plagued with injuries all season and has only featured in 12 games in the Premier League this term.

When he has played, the midfielder has proved to be excellent on the ball and has averaged a pass completion rate of 93%.

His latest injury will be heartbreaking for the midfielder, as he will likely miss the trip to Russia where he would’ve joined up with national teammate Mohamed Salah at this summer’s World Cup.

The loss will be a blow for departing manager Arsene Wenger, who will be hoping to end his 22-year spell with the club on a high note after a disappointing league campaign.

Arsenal play Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday 26 April at the Emirates, with the return leg a week later.
